Hospital Appointment in Shanghai for Foreigners: What You Need to Know

Shanghai is one of the most popular cities in China for foreign visitors, expats, business travelers, and international students. It is also one of the most developed cities for international medical services.
If you are a foreigner trying to see a doctor in Shanghai, the process may feel confusing at first. You may need to choose the right hospital, find the correct department, register with your passport, prepare medical records, confirm payment options, and understand how to move through the hospital on the day of the appointment.
Shanghai Has Expanding International Medical Services
Shanghai has been actively building its role as a medical hub for international patients. According to the Shanghai government, 22 public medical institutions have been approved as pilot units for international medical tourism since September 2023. In 2025, public hospitals in Shanghai served 73,200 foreign patients, an increase of more than 8% year on year.
The Shanghai government also provides an English medical services portal with information for foreigners, including health checks, international medical services, and how to see a doctor in Shanghai.
Public Hospital, International Department, or Private Clinic?
Foreign patients in Shanghai usually have three main choices.
First, public hospitals. These often have strong specialist departments and advanced equipment, especially for complex cases. However, the registration process may be more complicated, and not every department has English-speaking staff.
Second, international departments inside public hospitals. These may offer better service flow, more comfortable facilities, and some English-language support. Availability depends on the hospital and department.
Third, private or international clinics. These may be easier for English communication and primary care, but they may not be suitable for every specialist or surgical case.
Documents Foreign Patients Should Prepare

Before booking a Shanghai hospital appointment prepare the following:
Passport information, full name as shown on passport, date of birth, nationality, phone number, email address, current symptoms, previous diagnosis, medication list, allergy history, medical reports, imaging files, insurance information, and preferred appointment time.
For specialist visits, previous reports are important. For example, orthopedic patients may need X-rays or MRI reports; gastroenterology patients may need endoscopy records; cardiology patients may need ECG or ultrasound reports; oncology patients may need pathology and imaging reports.
Common Challenges for Foreigners
Foreign patients often face several barriers:
Chinese-language registration systems, WeChat mini-programs, payment methods, hospital navigation, department selection, medical terminology, insurance questions, and unclear pricing.
Even when a hospital has English information online, the actual appointment process may still require local coordination. Some hospitals also have different appointment rules for general outpatient visits, expert clinics, international departments, and emergency services.
Important: Emergency Care Is Different
If you have a medical emergency in China, do not wait for a routine appointment. Call 120 for emergency medical help in China or go to the nearest emergency department.
Appointment coordination is suitable for non-emergency consultations, planned checkups, dental care, specialist visits, insurance pre-checks, and document support.
