China is widely known for tourism: the Great Wall, Shanghai skyline, Hangzhou West Lake, pandas, high-speed rail, food, shopping, and culture. But for many international visitors, China is also becoming a place to handle practical health needs during a trip.
With more visa-free travel options, stronger international connectivity, and large hospital networks in major cities, some travelers now combine tourism, business, or family visits with health checkups, dental care, specialist consultations, or medical document support.
China Travel Is Becoming Easier
China’s inbound travel has grown strongly as visa policies have expanded. Xinhua reported that international visitors made over 82 million crossings in 2025, up 26.4% year on year, and more than 73% benefited from visa exemption or visa-free transit policies.
China’s National Immigration Administration also confirms that the 240-hour visa-free transit policy applies to nationals of 55 countries, allowing eligible travelers to stay up to 10 days when transiting through China under the policy rules.
This does not mean everyone can enter China visa-free. Rules depend on nationality, route, port of entry, destination, and whether the traveler is transiting to a third country. But for eligible travelers, the policy makes short medical-and-travel planning more realistic.
Health Checkups During a China Trip
One of the most practical medical services for travelers is a health checkup. Many people use a China trip to complete blood tests, ultrasound, ECG, CT, MRI, gastrointestinal screening, or general wellness checks.
For foreign residents, workers, and students in Shanghai, the Shanghai government also provides official guidance about where to complete required health checks, including the Shanghai International Travel Healthcare Center.
For tourists and short-term visitors, a private health checkup or hospital checkup package may be easier if arranged in advance.
Dental Care While Traveling
Dental problems are common during travel. Toothache, wisdom tooth pain, broken fillings, gum swelling, and crown issues can become difficult when you are away from home.
China’s larger cities have dental hospitals, public hospital dental departments, and private dental clinics. For non-emergency cases, travelers may plan dental examination, cleaning, imaging, fillings, extraction consultations, or implant consultations as part of a longer stay.
Specialist Visits and Second Opinions
Some visitors come to China for specialist consultations because they want a second opinion, faster imaging, or access to a specific department. Common areas include orthopedics, ophthalmology, gastroenterology, cardiology, oncology, dermatology, and rehabilitation.
China’s hospital system is large. By the end of 2024, China had around 39,000 hospitals and more than 1.09 million medical and health institutions. For international patients, the key question is not whether hospitals exist. The key question is how to identify the right hospital and department.
Shanghai and Hangzhou: A Practical Medical Travel Route
Shanghai is one of China’s most international cities, with strong medical resources and foreigner-friendly infrastructure. Hangzhou is close to Shanghai and has respected hospitals, a more relaxed city environment, and convenient high-speed rail access.
The Shanghai–Hangzhou high-speed railway can take around 45 minutes to about one hour on many fast services. This makes it possible for international patients to consider both cities when planning appointments, checkups, and recovery time.
